Meet Mindy MacKay: Author Peacebreakers

What or who inspired you to startwriting?
I've always had my head in the clouds, dreaming upuniverseswhenever the reality before me was too boring for my taste. I'm notsure when it was exactly I made the jump from "daydreamer" to "writer"or what caused it. It could run in the family--my dad used to make upbedtime stories instead of giving me the same old fairy tales.

How did you come up with your idea for Peacebreakers?
I'd had the idea for my main character in my head for awhile. In my gradeschool years, my friends and I would play pretend on the playground at recess, and Kiera was the persona I most often tookup--everyone else was a vampire, so I decided to be different and be a werewolf instead. A few summers ago, I was floating in the middle of the ocean on a cruiseship and boredom started to set in, so I toyed with the idea of Kiera, gave her a few supporting characters and a universe, and eventually managed to compile my inner cacophony into a book.

What would you want your readers to know about you that might not be in your bio?
Aside from writing, the love of my life is my piano--Istarted learning to play when I was four, took a break through much of junior high and high school, and eventually got back to it. I used to play classics out of music books, but these days, I play covers of songs by my favorite bands and write some of my own material.

As far as your writing goes, what are your future plans?
I plan to round off the Puppetmasters series in the foreseeable future--yes, my cruise-ship daydream has spawned a series. Once that's over with, I'll dabble around in different genres until I find a concept I want to see through. I'm thinking about trying my luck in YA, but I don't know for surewhat my next major project will be. When it comes to writing, I'm a bit of a vagabond.

If you could be one of the characters from this book, whowould it be and why?Despite my personal history with Kiera, I'd pick Jackson. Definitely. The greater part of his life was torturous, but Ithink that just makes the high points better. The duality between the lowest of pitfalls and the soaring feeling of finding true love--it's that kind of stark contrast that brings us closer to what it means to truly feel alive.

Can you give us a sneak peak into this book?
A corrupt system crushes an oppressed race under its boot heel. A cold-hearted psychopath fuels her experiments with the blood of the resistance. A determined vigilante conquers death to stand up against the injustice. A pair of lovers surprise each other with secret desires and unbreakable devotion. A deadly evil lurks under all of their noses, waiting to be unleashed.

Do you belong to a critique group? If so how does this helpor hinder your writing?
I'm actually President of a local writing club in my area--at least, until annual elections come around. It's a really encouraging, heartwarming community, and I think we've all been able to learn from each other and gain an appreciation for each others' unique literary voices.

When did you first decide to submit your work? Please tell us what or who encouraged you to take this big step?
I always knew in the back of my mind, if I was going to write a book, I might as well give people a peek inside my head and leave an imprint on the world, like the dinosaurs and trilobites. I could never have done it without the unwavering supportof my family, though. Throughout the entire process, they've been super helpful and encouraging.
